Approaching Midnight

I yawn

I stretch

and try not to kvetch

Yet I remain awake

I count my blessings

I count some sheep

and yet again

I do not sleep

On the up side

I am not sick with fever or fear

the place is cozy

my husband is near

My head feels fine,

things don’t hurt,

I don’t feel bad,

just feel alert

As people say, it could be worse

an off night happens

it’s not a curse

can just lay low

No need to contemplate

what I cannot know

Cannot anticipate

the ebb or the flow

Lull me in, slumber,

with the reassuring rhythm

of a Dick Van Dyke show
